Sydney (British spelling: [sɪdni]) is the largest city in Australia, and the state capital of New South Wales. Sydney metropolitan area has a population of 4:34 million and area of 12,000 square kilometers. Its inhabitants are called Sydneysiders, and Sydney dubbed as "the Harbour City" (City Pier), "the City of Villages" (City of Villages) and "The Emerald City" (Emerald City). Sydney is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, as reflected in its role as a major destination cities for immigrants to Australia.
The first British colony in Australia, Sydney, established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore First Fleet. Located in a bay on the Tasman Sea, Sydney is built on low hills around Port Jackson. The city is a place of establishment of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Metropolitan region is surrounded by national parks, and has many bays, rivers and niche.
This city is home to various parks, such as Hyde Park, Royal Botanical Gardens and national parks. Together with Sydney Harbour, this is a major factor that makes this city as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Sydney is considered as a most beautiful city in the world, based on a list of groups of Loughborough University in 2008 and was ranked 16th among global cities based on the 2008 Global Cities Index by Foreign Policy. According to the Mercer cost of living survey, Sydney is the most expensive city in Australia, and the 66th most expensive in dunia.Sydney also ranked the 10 cities that deserve inhabited in the world according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting and The Economist. Sydney is also an international financial center and is ranked 14 of the 50 cities of global finance by Mastercard Worldwide Centers of Commercial Index (2007), and ranks first in Australia.
The city was never held the Games at the international level, including the 1938 British Empire Games, 2000 Summer Olympics and 2003 Rugby World Cup final. The main airport serving Sydney is Sydney Airport.
